Aged care workers assist people who are unable to care for themselves.
Aged care workers may perform the following tasks:
- undertake domestic duties such as vacuuming, cleaning, washing, cooking and shopping
- arrange social activities and shopping trips, and accompany people on outings
- provide companionship, friendship and emotional support
- implement appropriate strategies for managing problems related to dementia.
Aged care workers work in private homes and community establishments. They may be required to work evenings, weekends and public holidays and may be required to live-in.
Aged care workers may specialise as an:
- Attendant Care Worker who concentrates on providing personal care assistance to disabled people in the home or workplace. These duties may include bathing, lifting, moving, dressing, grooming, exercising or feeding people with disabilities.
- Family Care Worker who provides practical care to family members when the main caregiver is unable to continue in the role without assistance.
