Helping students understand their world

the cultures, peoples, economies, and geography as well as the conflicts, challenges, and possibilities.Education outreach brings together students from all parts of Houston through more than 60 intriguing and interactive events each year. Students meet world leaders and discuss international topics, discovering how these issues affect their lives. Council programs promote civic participation – one of the cornerstones of democracy – and build globally competent citizens.

We also offer professional development for teachers, an international resource library, and lesson plans on current international topics. Our teacher workshops are certified by the State of Texas for gifted and talented credit.

This September the World Affairs Council of Houston, in partnership with the United Nations Foundation, will host Nothing But Nets malaria boot camp for students. Nothing But Nets is a global, grassroots campaign to save lives by preventing malaria, a leading killer of children in Africa.  Nothing But Nets provides insecticide-treated bed nets and also educates an African family on its use. Inspired by Sports Illustrated columnist Rick Reilly, thousands of people have joined this life saving campaign. This is a chance for students to learn more about malaria and get involved in this world-wide effort.
