What is western herbal medicine? Herbalists are trained in the use of herbal medicines using a combination of hundred’s of years of experience and modern scientific methods to help promote health and restore balance in disease. Herbalists believe using complex herbs rather than isolated constituents ensures a much more effective and holistic treatment. Course overview Western herbal medicine’s roots date back to Greek and Roman times and beyond to Ancient Egypt. Discover the principles of plant identification, actions, indications and prescriptions of hundreds of herbs, and learn how to manufacture a range of herbal preparations. The course consists of a combination of lectures, clinics, tutorials, practical demonstrations, and case studies.
Course outcome On completion of this course you will be set to pursue a career as a Botanical Medicine Practitioner, Herbalist, Herbal Medicine Practitioner, Phytotherapist or Western Herbal Medicine Practitioner.
Entry requirements To enter this course you will need to have: - Completed NSW Higher School Certificate, or equivalent (if you are under the age of 18 years at course commencement you may be required to participate in an interview to assess your suitability for the course) or - Be 21 years or over at course commencement.
Course structure The HLT60107 Advanced Diploma of Western Herbal Medicine requires the successful completion of 21 units of competency. This includes 12 common and 9 specialisation units. Below you will find an overview of the units of competency delivered within the HLT60107 Advanced Diploma of Western Herbal Medicine. The nominal duration for each unit of competency includes hours in lectures, tutorials, seminars, demonstrations and supervised clinical practice. Full-time students will complete this course in three study periods of 20 weeks duration each. This will involve an average of 25 hours of on-campus tuition each week, or guided self study for distance education students. Please note that the actual hours of delivery may vary across study periods depending on the units of competency delivered and the clinical practice requirements for these units.
Clinical practice Throughout your studies, you’ll be required to complete clinical practice. This is an integral part of the course and provides you with the experience of engaging with clients in a safe and supervised environment. Clinical practice hours can be obtained through the ACNT Student Clinic or an approved clinic site for distance education students. Please note that prior to commencing any clinical practice you will be required to successfully complete HLTFA301B Apply First Aid. Th is unit is delivered in your first study period.
