Course Outline
The course is hands-on. It is based on a relevant design brief set by the lecturer so you will:
• explore how the applications within Creative Suite interact with each other
• get to know the interface and learn how to customise Creative Suite to your liking
• work through the core tools and functions of each of the three software applications, Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign
• become comfortable with some of the basic concepts of graphic design and the basic aspects of printing
Who should attend
Adobe Creative Suite – InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop - provides the most comprehensive graphic, photo editing and design environment. Learn how to use the industry’s essential tools for design and print production, and combine them to improve and extend your creative output. You’ll gain a good working knowledge of each of the packages and become adept at using them together.
Course Outcomes
At the end of this course you will be able to:
• use Illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop with confidence
• draw and develop logos from scans or scribbles for commercial use
• clean up, modify and enhance images in Photoshop
• bring text, logos and images into InDesign to create business cards, flyers and multi-page documents
• create print-ready PDF documents for digital and offset printers
Course Content
Illustrator
• learn the tool bar, options palette and how to work within llustrator
• shapes, colours, gradients and transparency
• freehand drawing – the pencil and brush
• using the Pen tool to draw – hand tracing and accuracy
• work with text
Photoshop
• understand resolution, pixel depth and colour modes
• making Selections and creating basic masks
• retouching images – tonal arrangement, colour balance
• using the healing brush and clone tools
InDesign
• understand page layout
• placing text and graphics
• text wrapping and effects
• creating documents with bleed and understanding print ready documents
• creating a print ready PDF
Acrobat
• using Acrobat to create and edit PDFs
• adding PDF security
• using Acrobat for presentations
Prerequisites
Basic Computer/ Internet skills with PC or Mac is essential. We will be using Macs, but using the Creative Suite package is almost exactly the same on PC and Mac and your lecturer knows both.
Lecturers’ Biographies
Suzanne Keating has many years experience in the graphic design field, working for highly-regarded agencies both here and in London. She has extensive design experience with print media, packaging, point of sale, corporate identity, illustration and web design.
Suzanne’s current love is book-publishing which she moved into 9 years ago working as Art Director on a number of titles including the award-winning Illustrated Atlas of the World.
Suzanne designs and art directs on a freelance basis, as well as working as a lecturer at Billy Blue College of Design.
