Course Outline
You know a lot of the basics of photography but you still can’t make those portraits come alive. This course will show you many of the techniques employed by the professionals, with an emphasis on composition and lighting. You will capture people with confidence and expertise having completed this course.
Who should attend?
Anyone with a Digital SLR camera wanting to enhance their photographic skills in capturing portraits.
Course Outcomes
At the end of this course you will have:
• An understanding of the importance of good composition
• An appreciation of the subtleties of good lighting setups
• A working knowledge of the process of setting up a good portrait
• Expertise in systematically checking off all your camera settings
Course Content
Composition
• Brief overview of generic camera settings including WB, aperture, shutter-speed.
• Framing, shapes and neg/pos space
• Minimalism vs complexity, subject and environment
• Backgrounds
• Focus
• Colour
• Metering with available light
• Uploading and basic Photoshopping
• Recap and intro to Week 2 with homework exercise
Lighting
• Revision of camera settings - WB, aperture, shutter-speed.
• Recap of Week 1 – Composition
• Overview of types of light: what makes one type different to another, how can they be utilised in photographing people
• Metering for outdoor lighting – shade, sunlit and overcast
• Indoor lighting setups, key, fill/ bounce, direct and diffused
• Backdrops for indoor
• Focus
• Colour
• Uploading and basic Photoshopping
Course Prerequisites
While this is an entry-level course it is assumed you are reasonably familiar with your camera’s settings. Note: Compact cameras are not recommended for this course, however many of the areas covered can be transferred to the non-DSLR camera.
Lecturer’s Biography
Relmi Damiano is a designer, brand and digital strategist, social entrepreneur and photographer. She has worked freelance in Australia and the US, building the business she set up at the age of 15. She has specialised in the brand creation and implementation of not just her own business ventures but a number of other small to medium companies, focusing on their print and online presence as well as overall marketing strategies. Relmi is the Managing/Creative Director of About my Brain and the Brain Art Exhibition which promotes young talent and brain awareness in the community, and is studying an MBA at Macquarie Graduate School of Management. With all this diverse experience, only 10 months after graduating from Billy Blue College of Design with a Bachelor of Design in Digital Media she was invited back to share her expertise and teach third year students in design thinking and innovative business solutions.
