DIPOMA OF EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION AND CARE

The Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care is a comprehensive training package designed to meet the needs of the increasingly complex and challenging roles of team leaders, coordinators, directors and those responsible for the day-to-day running/management of the child care service/facility. A Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care is a nationally recognised qualification and enables a person to hold a variety of positions in a range of children's services including Director, Co-ordinator, team leader.

This qualification covers workers in children's services who are responsible for planning, implementing and managing programs in early childhood services, in accordance with licensing, accreditation and duty of care requirements. At this level workers have responsibility for supervision of other staff and volunteers.

Students can gain this Diploma qualification by completing the whole course or can apply for direct credit, recognition of prior learning, upgrade from an existing qualification or choose an 'assessment only' pathway. The course is Competency Based Training and Assessment. Competency based training reflects the Australian Qualification Framework principles of validity, reliability, flexibility and fairness.

Assessment tasks include written work as well as practical workplace based tasks, there are no final exams. Assessment is ongoing and includes; - Written Assessment - Scenarios, case studies and group discussions - Workplace tasks, observations and investigation.

The full Diploma consists of Competencies at AQF level III and Competencies at AQF level V. Competencies for this course include all competencies at Certificate III level and well as the compulsory and elective units at level V.

Course Duration: Approx. 1400 hours: Equivalent to 2 years full-time study (4 years of part-time study, but may be completed sooner). Students must complete 240 hours of work experience – this can be completed in your place of employment if currently working in a children’s service.

Entry Requirements: HSC or equivalent with strong literacy and numeracy skills The course is delivered via Distance Education.

This course targets; - Existing child care workers wishing to gain an initial qualification or upgrade existing qualifications. - Certificate III graduates - HSC school leavers or mature age students seeking a career in children's services.

Course Competencies: AQF Level: V The competencies at this level enable an individual with this qualification to: - Demonstrate understanding of a broad knowledge base incorporating theoretical concepts, with substantial depth in some areas - Analyse, and plan approaches to technical problems or management requirements - Demonstrate a command of wide ranging, highly specialised technical, creative or conceptual skills - Evaluate information using it to forecast for planning or research purposes - Take responsibility for own outputs in relation to broad quantity and quality parameters - Take limited responsibility for the achievement of group outcomes.
